Registration to Courses
The ERASMUS office is responsible for assistance concerning registration to courses. The Kölner Lehr-, Informations- und Prüfungs-Service (KLIPS) is the programme with which you are able to organise and manage your degree. As soon as you have a registration number ("Matrikelnummer"), you will be able to register for courses through KLIPS and create your timetable. If you have not received a registration number by the beginning of the semester, you can still participate in the courses. In this case you can use the 3rd registration phase ("3. Belegphase") to register for courses after they have begun. Erasmus students can (as long as the teachers agree and the capacity of the room allows it) participate in all courses offered by the English department. If you want to register for courses in a subject for which you are not enroled, please contact the Erasmus Office of that particular faculty. There you will be able to register for the courses in question. The individual lecturers of the courses can then admit you onto the course. The current list of courses offered by the English Department is available on KLIPS (click on "Philosophische Fakultät" => "Fachgruppen" => "Fächergruppe 5: Moderne Sprachen und Kulturen" => "Institut Englisches Seminar I" => "Lehrveranstaltungen").

Credit Points (CP)
Credit points are the "currency" of your degree. 1 CP is equal to about 30 hours of work. You receive 2 CPs for a participation certificate. Since every session is equal to 2 hours of work, a seminar with an average of 15 sessions per semester will mean that, through attendance, participation and in some cases extra homework, you will have done 30 hours of work (contact time). This is equal to 1 CP. You do the remaining 30 hours of work (1 CP) through the preparation for and follow up of the course (approximately 2 hours per session). Depending on the degree subject and course type, you can achieve further credit points by doing an exam, an essay or a presentation. Should you need a different number of CPs for your university, please discuss the matter with the individual lecturer of the course.
