PhD Project

Working title: The Dynamics of Language Contact in Australia

This PhD project investigates the dynamics of language contact in northern Western Australia, focusing on Kununurra Kriol, an English-lexified Creole language spoken in and around Kununurra. It is a particularly interesting case of language contact due to its limited documentation and its interaction with Miriwoong, a critically endangered Indigenous language.

The project examines selected aspects of Kununurra Kriol’s noun phrase, and how the nominal system aligns with or diverges from patterns found in other Creole languages. Through fieldwork conducted in collaboration with Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Culture Centre in Kununurra, the research also seeks to understand how linguistic structures relate to social and cultural practices in this multilingual region.

Through a morphosyntactic analysis of Kununurra Kriol’s nominal system, this project provides a case study of language contact and substrate influence in contemporary Australia. It also contributes to the understanding of how language contact contributes to structural variation and innovation.
